Ask your students to turn to a partner and share their interviews. After about two to three minutes, ask them to share where their parents/guardians use math (answer the last question). Record answers on poster paper.

The Visual Instruction Plan (VIP) (Adapted from Fred Jones)
Before the lesson, create a VIP that clearly illustrates each step of what students need to be able to do (see Figure 7.9). The VIP should be written neatly on butcher paper and displayed prominently in the classroom. Model how you use the VIP when going over some examples in class. The purpose of doing this is to help wean helpless handraisers who will want you to give them a private tutoring lesson during guided practice. Teachers who spend too much time reteaching material to individual students run the serious risk of losing control of the other half of the classroom.
